Trauma-Competent Professional

Enhancing Trauma Awareness

6-sessions. Prerequisites: None.

The new research on trauma provides us with startling statistics and critical information about the devastating effects of both simple and complex trauma. Because of the profound effects and implications of trauma, especially in childhood, and the fact that trauma often is trans-generational, it is essential for all family educators to be highly trauma aware and equipped to educate families about the nature of trauma.

Because the information in this course is presented in clear, easily understood, and translated segments, family professionals can more easily share vital trauma information, principles, and practical applications of this information and these principles with their parents/caregivers. This can empower parents and caregivers to greatly lessen or eliminate trauma on their families and to learn ways to intentionally avoid inadvertently re-traumatizing children.

Professionals can become clear and confident that they are providing family environments that are sanctuaries and can effectively employ interactive skills that promote health and healing from trauma.

Deepening Trauma Awareness

12-sessions. Prerequisites: Enhancing Trauma Awareness.

The goals for this 12 session course are to continue the process of enhancing and enriching participants’ awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the nature of trauma, essential concepts, facts and principles they can apply and present to parents and caregivers and discussions around the skills that allow for trauma-sensitive responses to children and adults who might be trauma-impacted.

Participants are encouraged to become more aware of the connections and impact trauma can have with regard to a myriad of related dynamics including attachment, fear, anger, trust, grieving, relationships, recovery, and healing.

Participants are invited to share in discussions around specific ways they can apply information in their personal and professional lives as a way to promote the transfer of training and encourage the intentional application of the information, principles, and skills in real-life situations.

Applying Trauma Principles

12-session course. Prerequisites: Enhancing Trauma Awareness and Deepening Trauma Awareness

This course provides opportunities for participants to continue the journey of becoming more aware, sensitive, and competent as family professionals with extensive trauma training. In addition to continuing to add to each person’s knowledge and skills base, participants are given opportunities to apply the research and principles of trauma to real-life situations as they share their own case studies with their colleagues, focusing on ways they are applying trauma principles.

Groups then discuss and process the assessments, choices, and ways of applying principles each participant shares, further advancing each participant’s awareness, sensitivity, and abilities to intentionally apply trauma principles in real-life situations. Successful completion of all three IFP trauma courses and fulfillment of additional requirements can lead to certification as an IFP Trauma-Competent Professional.

Trauma-Sensitive Professional

Trauma-Sensitive Certification

20 sessions. Prerequisites: None.

Participants in the course may earn LGI’s title of Certified Trauma-Sensitive Professional. We believe that participants who meet course requirements demonstrate increased levels of compassion for the impact of trauma. Participants can identify key elements of many traumas and the impact of each.

In order to become a Certified Trauma-Sensitive Professional each candidate must successfully complete the following: 

Full attendance at required course. If sessions are missed, a candidate must write a description of the content of any missed sessions, based on the information contained in the curriculum, to demonstrate that they are familiar with the concepts from all sessions. 
Confirmation that all reading from required texts has been completed. 
Successful completion of in-class presentations 
Presentation of a case study (5 minutes) to class based on the instructions provided. Submission of a written description of the case study is required. 
Satisfactory feedback from the facilitators that participant has demonstrated growth and knowledge of information, concepts, approaches, principles and skills provided over the required courses.

Signing and submitting a covenant agreement to adhere to the standards, values, and expectations of a Certified Trauma-Sensitive Professional.

Other Trainings

Processing Pain, Facilitating Healing

9 sessions. Prerequisites: Enhancing Trauma Awareness and Essential Communication Skills OR All three (3) Trauma Courses.

Every life has its share of pain. Professionals need to be intentional about addressing the pain, grief, and loss their client’s experience in order to be more effective as consultants and mentors.

In this nine-session course, professionals working with children, adolescents, and/or families or professionals who are supervisors are invited to explore the nature of the many forms pain can take: losses, traumas, deep injustices, loneliness, and isolation, unremitting fear, and depression.

We will engage in enhancing professionals’ approaches and skills to effectively process pain, grief, and loss so that instead of being debilitating, pain, grief, and loss can be effectively addressed, resolved, and healed, often resulting in powerful new insights about life and relationships.

Train the Trainers

25-hour course (2.5 hours per session) for 16 participants per group.

Participants who meet course requirements would be certified by Lakeside Global Institute as Adjunct Trainers with authorization to present licensed Lakeside Global Institute 2-hour workshops. Adjunct Trainers are also equipped to facilitate small group discussions. LGI’s Train the Trainers course applies the same approaches and techniques provided in course content. Participants can expect LGI trainers to maintain a high level of integrity with regard to processes of group leadership, management and facilitation.

By attending this course, participants can expect to:

  • Grow in awareness and understanding of groups and group processes
  • Identify roles and responsibilities of group leaders
  • Employ key skills to intentionally manage and facilitate groups
  • Become clearer about specific information, concepts, approaches, principles and skills (ICAPS) that can enhance the probability that groups will be successful
  • Increase levels of confidence and satisfaction in being group facilitators
  • Develop increased degrees of healthy, relational outward behaviors (intentionality with body language, facial expressions and voice tone)
  • Demonstrate abilities to communicate appropriately, sensitively and effectively
  • Maintain relational integrity with others
  • Discover skills to engage, nurture and be attuned to group participants
  • Practice strong problem-solving abilities
